The Kansas Legislature made two significant improvements to expungement in 2022. Senate Bill SB 366 expanded opportunities for expungement. Low-level drug offenders have an opportunity to get off the Kansas Registry and apply for expungement of the offense that placed them there. Successful specialty court participants are provided a fast track option for expunging their conviction. The Legislature and the Courts are on the move to expand expungement options for Kansans.

The Topeka Bar Association has organized an expungement day for September 15, 2022 at the Ag Hall, Kansas Expocentre open to the public from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM. Information sessions are being conducted at the Topeka Shawnee County Public Library, 1515 SW 10th Ave, Topeka, KS 66604, on Friday, August 19, 2022 from 3:30 PM to 6:30 PM and Saturday, Augsut 27, 2022 from 12:30 PM ro 3:30 PM.

If a criminal conviction is expunged, the applicant may, in most instances, state that he or she has never been convicted of the of any crimes that have been expunged. A criminal history report pulled by the general public will not include the expunged conviction. Convictions that are expunged may be used for certain purposes allowed by law. For example, if there is a future conviction, the previous expunged conviction may be used in the sentencing process. If the applicant applies for certain jobs or licenses, the expunged conviction must be disclosed.
